Chapter 46

Suzanne and Heather left the store and turned back to a road the map listed as A-70, making their way toward the Baraga State Forest. They passed the occasional house along the way, most were simple one story structures, one gated property did not have a visible home from the road, but the gate spoke of wealth and the desire to keep the owner's privacy. Road A-70 was unpaved and somewhat rough, the further they traveled it the rougher it seemed to get. Eventually they found a trail head with the help of the small map they'd purchased at the market. Suzanne parked the Traverse, tucking the keys up under the bumper should they get separated. They tossed their snacks and drinks into a pair of small day packs and hoisted them onto their backs setting out along the twin tracks of an old logging trail, following it as it wound its way into the forest.

The sun was high enough to dapple the late summer woods with sunshine and the temperature was hovering around 65 degrees. After hiking for less than fifteen minutes the two women stopped to take off the light jackets they wore and stuff them into their packs before continuing. The woods here seemed fairly open, made up mostly of maple and oak with scattered clumps of spruce and balsam and the occasional white pine or hemlock. Red squirrels were everywhere. The bold and brave little creatures would sit on low branches or rocks, staring with their large black eyes, often letting Heather and Suzanne approach to within a few feet, cackling excitedly as they scattered higher into the trees or under the logs and boulders that littered the forest floor. Once the women moved far enough away, the little pests returned to their perch and chirped out their alarm.

The croak of a large raven startled Heather as it took flight from high above them. It glided silently over the tree tops on it's great, black wings, using only the occasional flap to maintain its altitude. The sound of four wheelers echoed through the rolling hills, the girls had seen several of them throughout their drive as they crossed the roads to continue their adventures on the other side. Suzanne noticed a dark spot off to one side and took Heather's sleeve, pulling her to a gentle stop. She pointed with her finger.

"Cave?" She asked, unsure of what she saw.

Heather shrugged her shoulders and gestured with her hands as if to say, 'should we check it out?'

Suzanne nodded, checking her compass before leaving the trail. Heather followed close behind. They walked up the slight incline toward the rocky outcropping, trying to be as quiet as possible. The dark opening in the rocks drew closer with each step. When they
